There are two mechanisms in place to enable this.

Reliability and Reserve Emergency Trader (RERT) is a two-way contract between AEMO and commercial energy users. During times when the market has not provided enough energy to meet demand, such as extreme heat events, AEMO may request generators to increase supply as well as ask large commercial users to significantly reduce load or shut down. This program is optional for large commercial users who will be compensated for their participation (based on eligibility). Non-participating customers will incur a charge, passed through by AEMO via the energy retailer, as a cost of operating this mechanism.

It’s only used in emergency situations

While we’re experiencing more extreme and adverse events, RERT is only used in emergency situations and when certain events are triggered.

RERT can be called when there’s a lack of contingency generation and they want to avoid load shedding (commonly known as a brown out) or when future voluntary load shedding is needed for system security.

So, who participates?

Large C&I customers with a flexible load can participate, and many choose to join with a retailer (such as Origin).

Most retailers participate as they only require 10MW of capacity – and as of 2021, Origin has joined! (Read more about our product offering here.)

Impact of RERT for large business customers

Participating RERT customers

When an event occurs, AEMO may request large commercial users to significantly reduce load, switch to back up generation or shut down. In return, AEMO financially compensates those users. Origin RERT* customers are also exempt from any additional RERT charges.

*Businesses must be an Origin customer to be eligible for the exemption.

Non-participants

The cost of compensating participants is then passed through from AEMO to retailers, such as Origin, who then pass the cost to customers who consumed electricity in that region during the event.^

^AEMO charges are determined at a state level and customers are charged based on the region their supply is connected to.

How is the RERT charge calculated?

RERT has two components charged to energy retailers, who then pass the charge to customers in that area:

1. Usage or Activation charge: This charge applies when the service is activated.
2. Other or fixed charge: This can be charged throughout summer (of the current financial year) and represents payment to contracted participants to ensure they are available should AEMO deem it necessary to stabilise the power system.

The RERT charge on your invoice is calculated as follows:

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="86"
