With the Victorian government announcing it will ban gas connections in new homes from 2024, electrifying homes has become a hot topic. Making the switch to all-electric appliances has a number of benefits including helping you to save on your energy bill, and if you source your energy from renewables, helping you to reduce the carbon footprint of your home. Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to consider if you\u2019re thinking about making the switch.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is an electrified home?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In its simplest form, an electrified home is one that has no reliance on natural gas \u2013 just electricity.  With gas prices rising, making the switch to all-electric appliances could help you save<\/a> on electricity bills, make the most of solar<\/a> (whether you already have rooftop solar panels<\/a> or are thinking about it), and can reduce your home\u2019s carbon footprint if you\u2019re able to take advantage of electricity sourced from renewables. So, if your home\u2019s stove, hot water system or heating runs on natural gas, it may be worth considering electric when your appliances reach the end of their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is an ideal time to consider electrification?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Building or renovating is a prime time to consider all-electric systems and appliances. While energy-efficient electrical appliances<\/a> may cost more upfront, over their lifetime they\u2019ll have lower running costs<\/a> than their natural gas or less energy-efficient<\/a> counterparts. And if your new home has rooftop solar<\/a>, the savings could be even greater, as the real benefit of solar comes from using the energy you\u2019re generating first, rather than feeding it back into the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I need solar to electrify my home?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whilst rooftop solar<\/a> is a great way to help increase the green credentials of your home<\/a>, and help bring your energy bills down<\/a>, it\u2019s not a requirement when making the switch to electrification. Opting to use electricity as much as possible allows you to take advantage of energy-efficient appliances<\/a> \u2013 helping to reduce your household emissions and running costs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
