<\/em>Buses have transformed dramatically over the years; from horse-drawn to steam-powered and eventually motorised. Now we\u2019re helping power, and revolutionise, the future of buses in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In NSW, hydrogen<\/a> and battery electric<\/a> buses are being developed to be rolled out in the state\u2019s public transport network \u2014 a major step towards establishing a renewable hydrogen transport industry in the state. And Origin\u2019s been a part of this transformation, working with Sydney bus manufacturer Aluminium Revolutionary Chassis Company (ARCC) and New South Wales operator Red Bus Services to accelerate the net zero transition<\/a> of Australia\u2019s public transport system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do hydrogen buses work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hydrogen-powered buses work\u202fby converting hydrogen<\/a> molecules into energy in a fuel cell which powers an electric motor. Battery-electric buses\u202fdraw electricity from a power source, like a charging station, and store it in batteries<\/a> that can be recharged once the electricity has been used. 

In 2022, ARCC, with support from Origin, unveiled its hydrogen-powered public transport city bus \u2013 one of the first of its kind in Australia \u2013 at the Australasia Bus and Coach Expo in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Manager for Future Fuels at Origin, Ryan Willemsen-Bell said, \u201cNew technologies are crucial for the mass transit revolution, with battery-electric<\/a> and hydrogen<\/a> fuel cell vehicles promising options for decarbonising<\/a> passenger transport”. Compared to diesel buses, both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses offer the advantages of low pollution, noise reduction and use of renewable energies<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re assessing the potential of a Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub<\/a> which could use produced hydrogen to fuel bus operations in the Hunter Valley, Central Coast and Greater Sydney regions.  

In addition to powering buses, our drive towards greener transportation solutions at Origin includes a range of new electric transport services<\/a>. Electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions<\/a>, a fully managed EV fleet<\/a> and electric car share access for people to drive an\u202fEV\u202fright from their\u202fapartment\u202for office building are just some of the services we currently offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
