Moving house can be a stressful time filled with packing, but it\u2019s also the best time to start going through any clutter that\u2019s accumulated over the years. Here are a few ways to sustainably declutter pre-move and how to minimise clutter in your new place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recycle and sell items<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we\u2019re sorting through things that have accumulated over the years, it\u2019s easy to just toss items we no longer need away, leaving them to the fate of rotting in landfill. This doesn\u2019t have to be the case. There are recycling programs for a bunch of items we don\u2019t typically think can be recycled, such as: mobile phones, fridges, batteries, microwaves and printers. So, before you toss it, do some research to see if it can be repurposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re looking to upgrade the contents of your home, and provided your items are still in pretty good nick, chances are you could get some extra cash by selling them. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree are a great way to ensure your clutter goes to a new home and stays away from landfill \u2014 as they say, one person\u2019s trash is another person\u2019s treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give back by donating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you look around your home and see a million items you think you\u2019d like to ditch, don\u2019t start loading up your trash or recycle bins just yet. Many charity and donation centres are often looking for unwanted goods such as textiles, linen and clothing. And charity shops like the Australian Red Cross, Vinnies and The Salvation Army are always looking for quality donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to get rid of towels, sheets, and scrap fabric (that aren\u2019t in good enough condition to be donate to an op-shop), consider donating them to local animal rescue shelters. They\u2019ll use them to keep their animals dry and warm. Some charities will also turn these into rags that can be purchased by those in the automotive industry, like mechanical shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make the switch to electronic subscriptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Books and magazines take up a lot of space and are heavy to transport. You can eliminate all the clutter and hassle of packing your books by getting an electronic subscription or e-book reader such as a kindle or on your iPad. That way, you\u2019ve still got the joy of \u2018cracking open a good book\u2019 on the go, without the need to lug them from place to place when you move<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is, what should be done with your collection of books and magazines? Look to sell or donate your books and magazines so they can be loved by someone else rather than going to the landfill. You could also ask your local GP and hairdressing salons if they\u2019d like some magazines or books for their waiting room.

Can you fix it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before you rush to pop it in the trash or recycle pile consider whether there\u2019s a cost-effective way to repair the item. There are plenty of tips and tricks for repairing common household items online, and there are a range of handy people or skilled carpenters looking for odd jobs online. So before you ditch it, consider whether it may be more cost-effective to repair the item as opposed to replacing it. You might even be able to fix it up and flip it for a little extra cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upcycle it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We know that one person’s trash is another’s treasure, but these days upcycling can turn an array of old knick-knack into your very own treasures. From reupholstering old couches and chairs, to converting old electronics into clocks and statement d\u00e9cor, there\u2019s plenty of inspo to be found online \u2013 especially on Pinterest. If you\u2019re doing a cull of your old items, think about creative ways you might be able to re-purpose them or even turn them into gifts. Do you have some unwanted plant pots? Why not give them a freshen up with a coat of paint and turn them into succulent planters<\/a> to give out as gifts. Too many jars in your kitchen cupboards? Give them a new life by filling them with hot chocolate or cookie mix<\/a> \u2013 these make a great cost-efficient house-warming or Christmas gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
