Learn how Dukes Plain is helping offset the Australia Pacific LNG Project and provide an important habitat for identified flora and threatened fauna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origin purchased Dukes Plain as an offset area in 2013 to help meet the environmental conditions for the approval of the Australia Pacific LNG project.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The offset area is situated near Theodore in central Queensland and covers approximately 4,500 km2. It’s located within an ecological corridor of significance as identified by the state government.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The property provides an important biodiversity linkage between the\u202fIsla Gorge and Precipice National Parks, and in 2017, the Shankeen\u202fNature Refuge was extended over the entire\u202foffset area, delivering even greater protection for its biological diversity and cultural value.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The offset area encompasses 14 regional ecosystems within nine broad vegetation groups, with almost two-thirds of the area containing ecosystems\u202fsuch as woodlands and open forest, vine thickets, and areas of pasture grasses, which are valuable habitat for flora and fauna. Fauna such as the\u202fYakka skink,\u202fDunmall\u2019s\u202fsnake, Corben\u2019s long-eared bat,\u202fand the\u202fPale imperial hairstreak butterfly are supported within this habitat.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dukes Plain\u00a0also supports commercial activities as part of an integrated land management approach and for the last 40 years has been\u00a0a certified organic\u00a0cattle\u00a0grazing\u00a0property.\u00a0Through a carefully managed\u00a0focus on organics and cell grazing, the\u00a0current long-term lessee is\u00a0assisting\u00a0in the management of fuel load on the property, minimising the risk of\u00a0bushfires\u00a0and helping to improve the condition of the habitat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remote sensing of the property over the last six years using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology monitoring, has confirmed growth in identified flora and threatened ecological community offset requirements. This includes significant increases in vegetation\u202fheight\u202facross parts of the offset area indicating that the Brigalow and semi-evergreen\u202fthreatened ecological communities are improving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origin is proud of the success of the Dukes Plain offset area and will continue to safeguard the health of the property given its ecological value.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
