Sometimes when scrolling through internet plans the ‘jargon’ can be a bit overwhelming. So, if you’re not quite up to speed with all the tech terms, don’t worry \u2013 we’ve got you. The following are the most common terms you’ll come across when browsing internet plans, including the different types of connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different types of internet connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FTTP is one of the types of internet connection available where fibre-optic cables are run directly onto your premises, providing some of the fastest speeds in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fibre to the Building (FTTB)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FTTB connection is generally used when we are connecting an apartment block or similar types of buildings. In these cases, the fibre-optic cables go to a point where the node connects all the apartments to the nbn\u2122 network. The fibre node is typically a secure cabinet in your building\u2019s communications room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fibre to the Node (FTTN)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An FTTN connection is used where the existing copper phone and internet network between your home and street\u2019s fibre node is used to make the final part of the connection for your nbn\u2122 access. The fibre node generally takes the form of a street cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection is used in circumstances where the existing \u2018pay TV\u2019 or cable network can be used to make the final part of the nbn\u2122 network connection. In this circumstance, an HFC line will be run from the nearest available fibre node to your premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FTTC is an internet connection type used in circumstances where the optical fibre is extended to the curb on your street, connecting to a small Distribution Point Unit. From here, the existing copper network connected to your home will link the last part of your nbn\u2122 connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fixed Wireless (FW)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An nbn\u2122 Fixed Wireless connection uses data transmitted over radio signals to connect your home to the nbn\u2122 network. This type of connection is typically used where there is distance between premises such as in rural areas. Your data will travel from a transmission tower located as far as 14 kilometres, to an outdoor antenna that has been fitted to your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Downloads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A download is data that’s been copied from the internet, including files such as videos, music, games and more. Understanding your type of internet connection is crucial in determining the speed and efficiency of your downloads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uploads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An upload is data that has been transferred from one computer to a larger system, such as a cloud server. A reliable and fast internet connection is essential for smooth and efficient uploads. Upload speed impacts your abilty to conduct video calls and conferencing, so if you are working from home, having a quality upload speed will be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mbps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This means Megabit per second<\/a> which is the measurement for the speed of downloads and uploads. Keep in mind your broadband connection is dependent on where you live<\/a>. The speed of your internet connection<\/a> depends on the material of the wiring to your home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
