Look cool. With houseplants.

Everyone knows there’s no more effective way to make yourself look like a mature, responsible adult than by keeping a plant alive. But there’s also something else that houseplants are good for – cooling your house down.

According to everyone’s favourite space guys, NASA, when trees and plants “sweat”, they can cool themselves down through a process called ‘transpiration’. And when a plant cools down, the air surrounding it cools down too. Want to give it a go? Here are three indoor plants we recommend:

Weeping Fig (Ficus Benjamina)

One of the few trees that grow well indoors. For maximum cooling efficiency, opt for a tall trunk with a bushy top.

Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica)

The bigger the leaf, the better it cools. Varieties that tend to thrive in humid environments will take in water through their roots and then release moisture through the pores.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

With its high water content, it transpires and releases cool, evaporated moisture into the air. And as a bonus, this plant is also known for removing toxins from the air, such as benzene and formaldehyde. (Your aircon doesn’t do that.)

Want to make more of a difference?
