So, you\u2019re ready to make the leap from living with your parents to finding a place of your own. <\/strong>Congratulations! <\/strong>Moving out of your parents\u2019 house for the first time is a big change, and being as prepared as possible is going to help with this major life transition. <\/strong>These moving tips will help make this transition as easy as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost of moving house<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step is to make a budget<\/a>, says Laura Higgins, Senior Executive Leader at ASIC, whose Moneysmart website offers financial guidance and tips. \u201c[A budget] will help you work out your income and expenses, and what you can spend day to day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019ve done a budget, look at what living away from home is going to cost you. Ongoing costs will include rent, utility bills<\/a>, transport, groceries, and internet and phone bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your one-off costs will be your rental bond, rent in advance (usually four weeks) and moving fees. If you\u2019re getting your own place, add in connection fees for utilities and internet<\/a>. Think about contents insurance, too (not essential, but important), and parking permits, if applicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To share or not to share<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another big factor to consider is whether to live solo or in a share house<\/a>. \u201cSharing a place can be cheaper than renting on your own, but make sure you and your flatmates agree on responsibilities at the start,\u201d advises Higgins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also need to make sure that your financial arrangement is airtight. \u201cOne way to manage the risk of rental payments is to put everyone\u2019s name on the lease and any bills,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPut down in writing how much rent you\u2019ll pay and how household costs will be divided. If you don\u2019t and something goes wrong, you might not get your money back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving your stuff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s probably a good idea to declutter your life before you move. Set aside a weekend to sort through your \u201cstuff\u201d \u2013 decide what you want to take with you, what you\u2019d like to keep and store at Mum and Dad\u2019s, and what you no longer need. Donate the good stuff to charity or consider selling it to help raise funds towards your move<\/a>, and thoughtfully get rid of the rest \u2013 like recycling where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The price of a removalist will depend on whether you\u2019re going the share or solo route, but the typical cost of moving house is between $75 and $300 an hour. So it’s worth weighing up whether you want to DIY or hire professionals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will you need?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re moving into a share house<\/a>, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll only need to furnish your room, so hopefully you already own everything for the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there aren\u2019t built-ins, you\u2019ll need a clothes rack (or two), and possibly extra storage for towels and linen. Make it your own<\/a> with inexpensive decorative items such as fairy lights and artwork \u2013 but remember to check the landlord’s rules about hanging things on walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going solo is a very different story and you will probably be starting from scratch. To keep expenses down<\/a>, buy as much as you can secondhand, borrow from family or friends, and embrace the less-is-more approach<\/a> to decorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
