{"id":10373,"date":"2019-02-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.originenergy.com.au\/uncategorised\/conway-blacker-keeping-the-lights-on"},"modified":"2024-03-07T16:49:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T06:49:20","slug":"conway-blacker-keeping-the-lights-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.originenergy.com.au\/blog\/conway-blacker-keeping-the-lights-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Conway Blacker, keeping the lights&nbsp;on"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-lead\">Conway Blacker loves nothing more than a smooth-running turbine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, good energy is energy you can rely on,\u201d said Conway, whose role as Plant Technician at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.originenergy.com.au\/about\/who-we-are\/what-we-do\/generation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quarantine Power Station<\/a> is diverse, ranging from general plant operations to coordinating major plant shutdowns for important maintenance activities. \u201cI do pretty much everything to keep the plant highly reliable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His job includes repairing and maintaining the five gas-driven turbines at the heart of the Quarantine Power Station. The four smaller turbines are 25 MW units, each the length of a B-double truck. \u201cOur large 125 MW unit is about 20 to 30 metres high, with a footprint of at least 600 plus square metres. It\u2019s pretty big.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the power station is a peaking plant, only running during periods of high demand to help maintain a reliable supply of energy to the market, it\u2019s essential that it\u2019s ready to produce power as soon as it\u2019s required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the planning and maintenance work gets done when the plant isn\u2019t operating,\u201d said Conway. \u201cWe are always planning work well in advance and are constantly looking at how we can improve or expand our plant.
