Solar panels are exposed to harsh weather conditions, so cleaning is an essential part of maintaining your system and making sure you’re getting the most out of your investment. Here’s what you need to know about keeping your panels in tip top shape.

How often should you clean your solar panels?

Dirty solar panels can lose 20% of their energy output, so whilst there’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to cleaning frequency, the general rule of thumb is at least twice a year to ensure they’re working as efficiently as possible. Different factors like location, weather conditions and the type of panels you have can impact how often they end up with dirt, grime and debris on them.

For example, if you live in a desert region, you may need to clean your panels more frequently due to the buildup of sand and dust. Whereas if you live in a region with frequent rain or snow, your panels may not need quite as much attention due to the natural cleansing effect of the rain and snow.

As mentioned earlier, it’s also important to consider the type of panels you have installed. If you have older, textured panels, they may require more frequent cleaning due to the buildup of dirt and debris in the grooves. Newer, smooth panels are easier to clean and may require less frequent cleaning.

What is the best way to clean your solar panels?

We recommend getting your panels cleaned by a professional. But if you do decide to take on the task yourself, the first and most important step is to ensure you use the appropriate safety equipment, such as a harness.

The best solution for cleaning is a combination of water and a mild soap or a cleaning solution specifically designed for photovoltaic panels.

We’ve also compiled a handy step-by-step guide to walk you through the process:

  1. Rinse the panels with water to remove loose dirt and debris.
  2. Mix a cleaning solution of water and a bar of mild soap, such as dish soap, or a specialised solar panel cleaning solution.
  3. Apply the cleaning solution to the panels with a soft cloth or squeegee.
  4. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away any stubborn dirt or debris.
  5. Rinse the panels thoroughly with water to remove all cleaning solutions and soap residue.
  6. Use a clean, soft cloth to dry the panels.

What should you not do when cleaning solar panels?

When cleaning solar panels, it’s important to avoid certain practices that can damage the panels or reduce their efficiency:

  • Don’t use abrasive materials or chemicals: Scratches or damage to the panels can reduce their ability to absorb sunlight and generate electricity. Avoid using abrasive materials, such as scouring pads or wire brushes, and harsh chemicals that can damage the panels.
  • Don’t clean the panels on a sunny day: Cleaning the panels when they are hot can cause the cleaning solution to evaporate too quickly, leaving streaks or residue on the panels. Clean the panels on a cloudy day or in the shade.
  • Don’t use high-pressure hoses or gurneys: High-pressure water can cause damage to the panels and their seals, reducing their efficiency and potentially causing water damage to the electrical components.
  • Don’t walk on the panels: Walking on the panels can cause physical damage, reducing their efficiency and potentially voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.

Use professional solar panel cleaning services

If you’re worried about damaging your solar panels, consider a professional. Hiring a professional solar panel cleaner brings several benefits to your solar panel system. These benefits include increased efficiency through the use of the latest cleaning techniques, reduced damage due to the cleaner’s training in avoiding scratches or physical damage, improved safety as the cleaner is trained to handle the safety risks of cleaning and warranty protection as some manufacturers require professional cleaning to maintain the warranty.

If you’re looking to level up your solar system, a solar battery could be for you. Solar batteries open up a world of energy self-sufficiency – reducing your reliance on grid power and helping lower energy bills.

If you’re considering making the switch to solar energy, you’re likely wondering how much it will cost. While upfront costs may seem daunting over time solar panels can be a great investment. Our handy guide will help you decide whether going solar is right for you.

What influences the cost to install solar panels?

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ price for installing solar panels. The cost to install solar panels is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System size: The larger the solar panel system, the higher the cost. The size of the system is determined by the amount of electricity you need to generate, which depends on your energy consumption.
  • Type of solar panels: Different types of solar panels, such as monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin film, can have different costs.
  • Location: The cost of labour and materials can vary greatly depending on your location, as well as the availability of local incentives and rebates.
  • Installation company: The cost of labour can also vary depending on the experience and reputation of the installation company.
  • The complexity of the installation: The complexity of the installation, such as the type of roof and the presence of shading, can impact the cost of the project.
  • Quality of equipment: Higher quality equipment may come with a higher price tag, but it may end up being more efficient and last longer, making it a worthwhile investment in the long run.

Are solar panels worth the investment?

The answer to this question will vary depending on your circumstances, budget and energy usage. For many households though solar can prove to be a worthwhile investment and some of the benefits include:

  • Lower energy bills: Solar panels can reduce your monthly energy bills and provide long-term savings.
  • Increased property value: Homes with solar panels can have a higher property value compared to homes without.
  • Financial incentives: There are federal, state, and local incentives and rebates available to help offset the cost of solar panels.
  • Environmental benefits: Solar energy is a clean and renewable energy source that can reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Energy independence: With solar panels, you can reduce your dependence on the grid and be more self-sufficient in terms of energy.

It’s important to consult with a professional solar installer to get a comprehensive evaluation of your energy needs and to help you determine what the return on your investment will look like.

How much does solar cost?

Every Aussie home is unique, which means it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to installing solar. There are a number of factors that impact the performance of solar panels including the size and pitch (angle) of your roof, the local weather conditions, and nearby trees, buildings or even chimneys which can block the sunlight.

Moving house? Simplify your move with these FAQs about changing energy connections.

Whether you’re a seasoned mover or moving out of home for the first time, it’s good to be in the know when it comes to connecting and disconnecting utilities. Luckily, it’s one of the easier tasks to tick off your moving checklist.

We’ve compiled our most frequently asked questions about energy connections in one place. Read about disconnecting and connecting utilities when moving house, how long it usually takes and other helpful hints.

When should I disconnect power when moving?

Your current energy provider is responsible for disconnecting your utilities when you move. Before moving out you’ll need to call and organise the disconnection for the day after you move out. While you can organise a disconnection at any time, avoid any hassles by giving your energy provider at least a week’s notice.

Do I need to be home for electricity connection?

Moving is a busy time and it can be difficult to navigate. Luckily, in most states you don’t need to be home for your electricity connection to go ahead. Just make sure the electricity supply is switched off at the main switch beforehand and the technician can complete the electricity connection whether you’re there or not.

For Queensland and New South Wales Connections

If you live in Queensland or New South Wales, you may need to be at home to have electricity connected to your house. You shouldn’t attempt to turn off the power yourself – wait for the technician.

How do I change energy providers when moving house?

Moving house makes a great excuse for a fresh start, and that could mean it’s the perfect time to switch energy providers too. We’ve made moving easy – move online with us in minutes. Just choose an energy plan, let us know your new address and the date you’re moving in. We’ll work to make sure you’re connected the day you move in.

How can I organise an urgent electricity connection?

Slipped your mind? Don’t worry, it’s simple! Just book your move online using the form for either new or existing customers before 1pm Monday to Friday and we’ll connect your power the next business day.

If you’re moving today and need an urgent electricity connection, please call us.

How do I connect electricity to rental property?

If you’re moving into a rental property, it will more than likely already have utilities connected. Either the landlord or real estate agent will be able to let you know. Make sure you find out before moving in, so you’re not left in the dark on move in day!

To organise utilities for the rental property or to set up an account in your name, you simply need to call up the energy retailer or set up an account online.

How do you connect electricity to new build and how long does it take?

Connecting utilities is quick and easy, but it can take a little longer if you need an electricity or gas meter installed.

If you’re moving into a new build, utilities can take 10 to 20 days to get connected if a new meter installation is required. Make sure you check with your builder that the electricity and gas meters are installed or will be installed by the time you move in.

Find everything you need to get started with your electricity or natural gas here including information for property owners and builders, forms and application submissions.

If the energy meters are already installed, simply follow the process to connect electricity and gas either by phone or organise your move online.

Is weekend electricity connection available?

Electricity connections typically occur on a weekday. You can organise your move Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) before 1pm for next business day utility connections.

With the increasing demand for renewable energy, more and more people are turning to solar power to meet their energy needs. However, not all solar panels are created equal, and choosing the right panels for your home or business can be a challenge. Here’s what to look for when considering solar for your home.

How do you know you’re buying quality solar panels?

Solar is an investment, so you want to ensure you’re getting bang for your buck when purchasing your system. There are a few things you want to look out for to ensure you’re getting the best quality panels for your home:

  • Quality materials for durability and efficiency: High-quality solar panels are built to last, with robust materials and construction that can withstand harsh weather conditions and long-term exposure to the elements. The more higher quality the panel, the more efficient it will be – meaning the more electricity it will be able to produce for a given amount of space and sunlight. You can determine the more durable panels by their advertised life expectancy.
  • Temperature coefficient: The temperature coefficient is a measure of how well a solar panel performs in high temperatures. High-quality panels typically have a lower temperature coefficient, meaning they perform better in hot weather.
  • Warranty: A strong warranty is a good indicator of the quality of a solar panel. Look for panels with a warranty that covers the panels for a minimum of 15 years. It’s also important to consider whether your retailer will be around to service warranty requests. Choosing an established and experienced solar retailer can help give you peace of mind.
  • Brand reputation: The reputation of the manufacturer and brand of a solar panel can also be a factor in determining its quality. Choose panels from reputable brands with a proven track record of producing high-quality solar panels.
  • Performance guarantee: Some high-quality solar panel manufacturers offer performance guarantees, which guarantee a minimum level of performance for a set period of time.

Should I invest in solar?

Investing in solar is a decision that should be based on your specific needs and goals. In addition to your energy consumption, which will influence how long it takes to see a return on your investment, it’s important to consider your budget. Investing in high-quality solar panels could be expensive upfront – depending on what rebates are available in your area.

Every Aussie home is unique, which means it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are a number of factors that impact the performance of solar panels including the size and pitch (angle) of your roof, the local weather conditions, and nearby trees, buildings or even chimneys which can block the sunlight.

Solar is an investment, but it can be a great way to reduce your reliance on the energy grid and help reduce your energy bills in the long run.
