We work with large businesses across Australia, helping them reduce their energy costs and meet their emissions reduction targets through cleaner energy solutions – like solar and batteries. We also provide them with data and insights into the energy they generate and use.
One Origin customer embracing energy data is JB Hi-Fi Group, which has made a commitment to reach net-zero direct (Scope 1 and Scope 2) carbon emissions by 2030.
As a step towards this goal, JB Hi-Fi engaged us to install a 160 kW solar system at their new Chadstone Homemaker Centre store in Victoria.
To monitor and track performance of the solar, our team built a live in-store smart energy dashboard that displays how much solar power is being generated, how much energy is being used and approximately how much CO2 is being avoided by using solar. The dashboard is displayed to customers and staff behind the payment counter, to show the effect solar energy is having in JB Hi-Fi stores.
As part of a national rollout, we’ve now installed fifteen solar systems and smart energy dashboards at JB Hi-Fi stores across Australia’s East Coast, with ten more to be installed in the coming months. Within the first year of installation, we estimate the solar systems will have offset more than 342 tonnes of carbon.
We’ve also conducted carbon assessments to help JB Hi-Fi find other opportunities to reduce their carbon footprint and help achieve their net zero goal. We looked at stores in different locations and suggested improvements to help JB Hi-Fi reduce energy consumption. These included improvements to building management systems, installation of LED lighting, employee roster scheduling, air conditioning optimisation and shopfront display energy usage.
“More businesses are reaching out for advice and practical solutions to help make energy work better for them,” said James Magill, Executive General Manager, Origin Zero. “Solar is a great way to help reduce costs over the medium to long term and help deliver on emissions reductions targets. If you can see it on large dashboards right there in front of you, it also generates interest and excitement with employees and customers.”
At Origin, we have deep experience in solar, having delivered more than 2,300 solar projects for Australian businesses over the last 15 years, with an installed capacity of 83MW.
