Has your electricity bill ever been ‘estimated’? Do meter readers come to your property to read your electricity meter? If you’ve answered yes to either of these questions, it’s likely your home or business has a basic meter. We explain what the smart meter rollout is, how it can benefit your business and, if you’re an Origin customer, when you can expect your meter to be upgraded.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are advanced digital meters that measure and record your electricity usage. 

Unlike traditional meters, which require manual reading, smart meters automatically and wirelessly send your usage data to a metering provider. The metering provider makes the data available to us, your retailer.  

Key features of smart meters:

  • Energy awareness: Smart meters provide near real-time data on energy usage, meaning you can track your energy usage in hourly intervals with My Account.  
  • Automatic data transmission: Your smart meter will transmit data wirelessly at regular intervals, so there’s no need for manual meter readings. This can help where access might be a problem. 
  • Two-way communication: The communication is two-way, which means as well as being read, other actions can be taken remotely, such as connecting or disconnecting the meter when moving premises

Smart meters could help save you money

Going smart lets you monitor your electricity in loads of detail and understand when you’re using the most energy.  

Patterns, spikes and anomalies in your consumption will be clear to see.  Having these insights can really set your business on a path to make changes and save. 

Other benefits of smart meters for small business

  • More accurate billing – because smart meters provide precise and real-time data, there are fewer discrepancies caused by estimated readings. 
  • Operational efficiencies – as smart meters offer detailed insights into energy usage, you can identify inefficiencies and areas where your energy is being wasted. Monitoring your energy use can also help you to maintain and manage equipment more effectively, predicting maintenance needs and preventing costly breakdowns. 
  • Improved budgeting and forecasting with more detailed energy consumption information, you can better predict your energy costs and budget accordingly. Also, having access to detailed historical data can help you to forecast future energy needs and plan for potential increases in usage or costs. 
  • Improved reporting detailed energy usage reports can help you comply with any regulatory requirements or energy efficiency standards. 

Timing of the smart meter rollout

As part of a state government initiative, smart meters were rolled out to almost all homes and businesses in Victoria several years ago. 

In April 2024, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) announced its intent to achieve Australia-wide uptake of smart meters by 2030. Their formal start date at this stage is 1 July 2025. 

Here at Origin, our work has already begun. We’ve commenced our own, retailer-led rollout to get your meter upgraded sooner.  

How the rollout happens

We’re contacting customers in all the states we’re an electricity retailer – so in ACT, NSW, QLD and SA. (We retail in VIC, but their rollout is complete.)  

When we first get in touch, it’s to let you know your property has become eligible.  

Then, two weeks to two months after that, we’ll be in touch again to let you know the date we’ve nominated for your meter replacement to occur. 

What if the upgrade date doesn’t suit?

Our small business customers have an option to advise us if the date is unworkable for some reason. We pass that on to the meter providers, who will then attempt to reschedule the work with you. 

How long will the installation take?

In cases where the meter is being swapped out, there’ll be a power outage from 30 minutes up to two hours. If major works are being completed in conjunction with the meter exchange, it could take longer.  

In almost all circumstances, the power supply will resume the same day. 

Are there costs involved?

If we can swap out your meter without the requirement for extra works onsite, then there is no cost to you.  

If any major work is required to install the meter  – for example, large scale removal of asbestos or meter relocating – we’ll stop work and let you know what needs to be done in order for us to reattempt the work. In these situations, there may be additional charges to the building owner should they arrange this work with an electrician. 

The Australia-wide rollout of smart meters represents a significant and forward-thinking step for businesses across the nation.

Moving premises can be a complex process for businesses. There’s a range of potential pain points. We’ve compiled this list of top challenges for business movers, and offered some advice about how you can meet them.

We’ve all received them; emails that look just a little off, text messages that don’t look legitimate or an unexpected phone call asking you for information you don’t normally give out over the phone.

They’re often scams and they’re becoming more common. From the fake energy provider threatening to cut off your power, to the ever popular African prince looking for a bank account to store his millions, scammers are working harder and harder to get their hands on your hard earned money, or worse, your identity.

Scammers often mimic legitimate companies, like Origin, to trick you into opening a fake email, clicking on links, making a payment or even giving away your personal details.

How to stay safe online

Scam emails (otherwise known as “phishing”) set out to deceive people into providing their personal details. These fake emails often include a corporate logo and look like they’ve come from a legitimate company. If you believe you’ve received a scam Origin email, we also encourage you to report it to www.scamwatch.gov.au

If you use My Account to manage your energy online, you should also make sure you have a strong password – and never share that password with anyone. We’ll never ask for your My Account password over the phone, or ask you to send it to us via email.  

What should you do if you think you’ve received a scam email?

  • Close it and contact us
  • Forward the fake email to hello@origin.com.au so we can investigate further

What not to do

  • Click on links
  • Open attachments
  • Download pictures
  • Forward the scam email to others

How to spot a scam

Be on the front foot, here’s how you can tell if an email or text is a scam or a real Origin email:

  • It might be an email scam if the sender has a suspicious email address.
  • Look out for spelling mistakes or bad grammar – these are often a clue that it’s not from us.
  • Look carefully at any links – do they point to origin.com.au or originenergy.com.au? We’ve seen scam websites posing under originnergy.com.au so look carefully at the website address.
  • The only safe and trusted way for you to pay your Origin bills online is via My Account or the Origin app or at originenergy.com.au/pay. Anything asking you to make an Origin payment outside of those could be a scam.
  • If you receive a suspicious email you suspect could be a scam Origin email, the quickest way to confirm whether it’s real or not is to check your account either using My Account or the Origin App. Your most current energy bill and billing history will appear there.

What are the legitimate Origin emails?

It’s important to look out for domain names when opening emails. A domain name is a unique name that identifies a website or an email address. Some common domains that we send emails from include:

  • originenergy.com.au – e.g. retail@originenergy.com.au
  • origin.com.au – e.g. hello@origin.com.au
  • originbroadband.com.au – e.g. help@originbroadband.com.au
  • originzero.com.au – e.g. noreply@originzero.com.au
  • ecomms.origin.com.au – e.g. origin@ecomms.origin.com.au
  • icomms.origin.com.au – e.g. origin@icomms.origin.com.au
  • looop.co – e.g. notify@looop.co
  • spike.originenergy.com.au – e.g. spike@spike.originenergy.com.au

Emails sent from other domains that may look similar should be treated as suspicious. We also encourage our suppliers to be vigilant when receiving any such requests and to ensure they’re familiar with Origin’s standard supplier process.

Other scams to watch out for

  • Emails, or phone calls, involving fake orders or requests for specific parts being sent from individuals claiming to be part of the Origin Procurement team.
  • Emails offering you amazing job opportunities. Before offering any positions, Origin undertakes a thorough interview process. This usually involves both face to face and telephone interviews – we also ask candidates apply for roles formally via our website. What can you do if you’ve fallen victim to a scam?

If you believe you’ve been a victim of a scam online, here’s what to do next:

  • Call our customer service team on 13 24 61
  • Contact your financial institution immediately
  • Disconnect your computer from the internet and run an anti-virus scan
  • Report it to Scamwatch so they can warn others about the scam email

Record-keeping and ensuring you make the right tax claims are important as tax season rolls around. Whether you run a small business, are an employee or own a rental property, understanding what you’re able to claim on your tax return is crucial for your future tax planning come tax time.

What can be considered as a tax deduction?

Simply put, tax deductions are permissible reductions in your taxable income, that are recognised by Australian tax law. Tax-paying individuals and businesses can claim certain expenses or contributions related to their work. These deductions reduce the amount of income you’ll be taxed on — effectively decreasing the overall tax liability, providing financial relief and greater tax savings.

There are many deductions you can claim against work-related expenses that people often forget about when completing their tax return. Certain travel expenses, home office expenses, education and even internet and mobile phone expenses may be tax deductible. Remember, it’s worth speaking with a tax professional to confirm which apply to you (this will help ensure you’re compliant and the cost of tax advice is deductible, too!). 

Financial expenses

Accounting fees

Did you use a tax agent to prepare and lodge your tax return last year? If you did, then you can claim the amount you paid last year – on this year’s return. On your tax return, simply put the amount you paid in 2023 into section D10 – “Cost of Managing Tax Affairs”. The fees you pay for tax return help are always tax deductible. 

Donations

If you’ve been generous over the past financial year, it’s an added perk that your donation may extend beyond a good cause to a tax break. Donations of $2 or more to organisations that have the status of a deductible gift recipient  are tax deductible if you have a receipt. 

Income protection insurance

You’re entitled to claim tax deductions for insurance premiums paid against the loss of income. Remember though, this doesn’t include life insurance, trauma insurance or critical care insurance.

Investment losses and bad debts 

Many people think they are a share trader rather than an investor, make sure you know the difference to ensure you lodge your tax correctly this year.

It’s important for investors to include any capital losses not used to offset current year capital gains on their tax return in the year they occur. By including capital losses on a tax return, they’re available to use in future years and can prevent you being contacted by the ATO when the loss is used in future years. Remember, investors can’t use capital losses to offset income like wages. Business owners also need to prove they have made a genuine attempt to recover any bad debts that may have arisen. Your financial advisor can explain how to document the debt as evidence the amounts were written off before the end of the financial year. 

Prepaid expenses

With tax deductions, every little bit counts. Prepaying your expenses (such as with PAYGI) can attract a tax deduction that is commonly overlooked. 

Small business owners and rental property owners can prepay expenses such as subscriptions, business travel expenses, training events, leases, rent, phone, internet, insurance and business asset repairs (note these can’t exceed more than one year and the expenditure must be over $1000). 

Rental property expenses

One of the most common mistakes when owning a rental property is not understanding what can be claimed and when, in particular repairs and capital expenses. Repairs can generally be claimed immediately, but any improvements and capital expenses must be claimed over time.

Any work done before earning any income from the property is considered to be part of the acquisition cost and can’t be claimed unless it’s capital works or a depreciating asset, which gets claimed over a number of years. Acquisition costs can be used to reduce any capital gains when the property is sold.

Union fees

If you pay to be a part of your workplace’s or industry’s union each year, you’re entitled to a tax deduction under D5-Other work related expenses

Assets and inventory

Review your asset acquisition

Running a small business? Did you purchase new or second-hand assets for your business recently? If you have depreciating assets, it’s worth finding out whether you’re eligible for small business concessions, such as simplified depreciation rules, the small business income tax offset or immediate deductions for prepaid expenses. Take advantage of these concessions and/or instant asset write-offs to see if they can help reduce your tax bill (some may also save you time).

Take stock of your inventory

If your business produces or purchases stock for sale, you’ll likely need to do at least one stocktake at the end of the financial year for tax purposes. It’s important to identify any damaged or obsolete stock and write it down or write it off. This exercise will impact the value of the trading stock and your profit margins. 

You’ll also need to consider how to value your trading stock every financial year, as you may be entitled to claim a tax deduction when the opening stock exceeds the closing stock. 

Work related and operational expenses

Home office expenses

With many of us working from home, we’ve put together a quick guide to deductions for home office expenses.

The way you claim (and the amount you claim) for your home office expenses will depend on the method you use to calculate a working-from-home deduction. If you’re eligible to claim a working-from-home deduction, there are two ways you can do this: the fixed rate method or the actual cost method.  

Fixed rate method

The fixed rate method allows you to claim 67 cents for every hour you work from home and covers additional running expenses that are often difficult to apportion, such as your phone and internet usage, electricity and gas, stationery, and computer consumables (like printer ink). You can’t claim these items separately if you use the fixed rate method, but your deduction can include working-from-home expenses, which the rate doesn’t cover, such as decline in value of depreciating assets used for working from home.  

Actual cost method

Using the actual cost method, you work out your deduction by calculating the actual additional expenses you incur when working from home, such as your phone, data and internet expenses. Where you incur running expenses for both private and work purposes, you need to apportion your deduction. You can only claim the work-related portion as a deduction. Whichever method you use, you’ll need to make sure you have the right records, or your deduction may be disallowed. 

Sole traders and partnerships

If you’re a sole trader or in a partnership, you may be able to claim the business-use portion of running expenses (the additional costs of using your home for your business activities) and occupancy expenses (what you pay to own or rent your home). If you operate your business from your home and have a dedicated area set aside as a ‘place of business’, you may be able to claim occupancy and running expenses. These can include mortgage interest or rent, electricity and phone use. Mobile phone expenses

As a business owner or an employee, you can claim the cost of your work-related calls (not your entire phone bill). It’s a good idea to keep a logbook of when you use your personal phone, to determine the average percentage of your calls that are work-related. If you have claimed working from home expenses, you cannot claim the same phone expenses twice.

Education and training expenses

You can claim self-education expenses if there’s a direct connection between the course and your role in your business, or your duties as an employee. You could be entitled to a tax deduction for expenses including the following: 

  • Textbooks, professional and trade journals 
  • Stationery 
  • Photocopying 
  • Computer expenses 
  • Student union fees 
  • Student services and amenities fees 
  • Accommodation and meals, only when participating in your course requires you be away from home for one or more nights.
  • Running expenses if you have a room set aside for self-education purposes – such as the cost of heating, cooling and lighting that room while you are studying in it. 

Also, if you’re a small business with an aggregated turnover of less than $50 million, you may be eligible for the small business skills and training boost. The boost would give you an additional 20% bonus tax deduction for eligible expenditure incurred on training new and existing employees.

If eligible, you can claim a deduction on expenditure for external training courses delivered to your employees, either in person in Australia or online. The training must be provided by an external training provider registered in Australia. The boost is available until 30 June 2024. 

You can’t claim expenditure for training you undertake yourself as a business owner, such as where you are a sole trader, partner in a partnership or independent contractor.

Work-related car expenses

Business owners who use their personal car for work-related reasons, apart from driving to and from work, can usually claim running costs as a tax deduction where a valid logbook has been kept for a representative period of three months. Or you can use the cents per kilometre method for up to 5,000 kilometres. To be eligible, you must be the owner of the car and your travel must be part of your working day. For example: driving between offices, special trips to the post office, bank or moving from one job site to another are considered work-related expenses.

Employees can also claim car expenses in similar circumstances.

1. Energy Market reports

The average NEM spot electricity price for the March 2024 quarter was $78/MWh:

  • $30/MWh higher than Dec-23 quarter, reflecting higher demand from warmer weather and increased interconnector and baseload generator outages.
  • $5/MWh lower than Mar-23 quarter, reflecting stronger baseload generator availability and higher renewable generation Source: AEMO Gas price Q3 (Mar-23) Q3 (Mar-24) Electricity price Q3 (Mar-22) Q3 (Mar-22).
  • Average domestic spot gas price for Mar-24 quarter was $12/GJ, relatively flat on both Dec-23 quarter and Mar-23 quarter.

Virtual power plant

Origin’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP), also known as ‘Origin Loop’, uses smart meter data and AI to aggregate and orchestrate hundreds of thousands of distributed energy sources in homes and businesses to help relieve pressure on the grid in times of high demand.

3. Customer stories

Melbourne City Football Club

Melbourne City FC and Origin are proud to announce a significant milestone in their partnership with the installation of rooftop solar panels and battery storage at the newly opened City Football Academy Melbourne at Casey Fields. The newly installed 40 kW rooftop solar system is expected to generate approximately 50 MWh of electricity annually, while a 13.5 kW battery storage system helps to ensures the club’s operations can function efficiently . This initiative is a significant stride for Melbourne City FC towards reducing it’s carbon footprint at their state-of-the-art facility.

Commenting on the partnership, Melbourne City FC CEO, Brad Rowse, said:“As a club, we pride ourselves on innovation and making a positive impact on our community, and we are fortunate to have a partner in Origin that shares similar values.”

Origin, now in its third year as a partner of Melbourne City FC, has demonstrated its commitment to help the club reduce its carbon emissions by implementing renewable energy solutions to power its football and administration operations.

4. Origin news and updates

4.1 Origin has agreed to acquire the Yanco Delta Wind Farm in the Riverina

Origin has entered into an agreement with Virya Energy to acquire its Yanco Delta Wind Farm, one of the largest and most advanced wind and energy storage projects in New South Wales. Yanco Delta, consists of a 1.5 GW wind farm and an 800 MWh battery. This acquisition marks an important step in Origin’s ambition to lead the energy transition through cleaner energy and customer solutions.

4.2 Origin acquires renewables developer Walcha Energy

Origin has acquired renewable energy developer Walcha Energy, including the Ruby Hills Wind Farm and Salisbury Solar Farm, with up to 1,300 MW of planned capacity.

The acquisition of Walcha Energy is consistent with Origin’s ambition to lead the energy transition, specifically the strategic priority to accelerate renewables and storage in our portfolio.

5. Energy market updates and reports

5.1 The expanded Capacity Investment Scheme

The Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) provides a national framework to encourage new investment in renewable capacity, such as wind and solar, as well as clean dispatchable capacity, such as battery storage.

It aims to help build a more reliable, affordable and low-emissions energy system for all Australians. An expansion of the CIS was announced in November 2023. The expanded CIS seeks to incentivise the national deployment of 32GW of renewable capacity and clean dispatchable capacity by 2030.

Competitive tenders for the expanded CIS will be held approximately every six months, which began May 2024. This represents a potential source of significant new generation supply into, and a meaningful intervention in, the National Electricity Market.

5.2 Renewables continued to increase NEM market share

During the first quarter of 2024, the output from all generation sources, except gas-fired and hydro stations, increased to meet the growing demand in the National Electricity Market (NEM). Renewables led this surge, raising their overall share of total NEM supply to 39.0%, up from 37.4% in the same period the previous year. Grid-scale solar generation had the greatest increase in output, with an 18% lift in quarterly average output from the previous Q1 to a new record of 2,164 MW this quarter. This increase continued to be driven by new and recently commissioned capacity in New South Wales and Queensland.

Businesses are being prompted to improve energy efficiencies as a result of the decarbonisation of Australia’s economy. But it’s not just about being more energy efficient — your business could also save by adopting smarter energy habits.

Understand your energy costs

Most often, the term; “energy-efficiency” refers to simply decreasing the amount of energy you’re using. But for many businesses, there’s an opportunity to ensure that the energy you’re using is working for you. Understanding your energy bill and how you use energy is the first step towards getting the most out of it.

Look at demand management

Australia’s energy networks are under the biggest strain during high demand times, or what’s known as electricity peak times. During these times, the cost of energy is usually higher because of the infrastructure needed to deliver it. To take the pressure off the country’s electricity networks, many energy providers offer incentives such as cheaper prices during off-peak times. Depending on the type of business you run, it may be worth exploring whether an off-peak energy rate could help reduce your bill. 

Assess the effectiveness of your electricity

If you own or manage a large business1 then the term Power Factor should be one you’re familiar with — understanding it could help you lower your business’ demand charges, and therefore, your running costs.

Power Factor refers to the effectiveness of incoming electricity. Sometimes, a poor power factor can affect the performance of equipment, since it uses more electricity to operate. Power Factor Correction units are available to increase the efficiency of your power supply (and may reduce your energy costs). Request a tariff review

A tariff is a pricing structure – set by the distributor in your area – it’s the way that your business is charged for the energy used.

Network tariffs are regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and are usually set according to your previous consumption levels, location, the time you use the most electricity and your ongoing demand.

By assessing the way your business is consuming energy, via the usage patterns on your bill or our online portal, there may be an opportunity to change your tariff and explore whether a different tariff would suit your needs better. Electricity and gas markets

Average NEM spot electricity price for Dec-23 quarter was $48/MWh: − $24/MWh lower than Sep-23 quarter, reflecting lower demand due to milder seasonal temperatures and higher solar generation − $43/MWh lower than Dec-22 quarter, driven by lower coal fuel costs following the introduction of coal price cap and increased renewable generation.

Average domestic spot gas price for Dec-23 quarter was $11/GJ, relatively flat on Sep-23 quarter and $7/GJ lower than Dec-22 quarter when prices were volatile post the unprecedented market conditions in Jun-22 quarter.

City of Melbourne

Origin is working with the City of Melbourne to deliver three battery energy storage systems, as part of its ambitious Power Melbourne project.

Power Melbourne is an exciting program. This first stage will see our team install three batteries with a combined capacity of 450 kW / 1MWh – equivalent to powering more than 70 homes each day.

It’s a great example of the tailored energy solutions that we can offer our large customers to help meet their unique needs. Origin Zero was selected to install and operate the batteries following a rigorous tender process run by the City of Melbourne. All three batteries are expected to be installed by mid-2024.

The batteries will charge during the day when there is a higher proportion of renewable energy in the grid. Stored energy will then be released back into the grid when it’s needed most – helping to support the transition to renewable energy.

Dreamworld

Dreamworld is now home to the largest solar system at an Australian theme park, after we completed the installation of 2,000 panels and 13 inverters.

Expected to cover an estimated 24% of Dreamworld’s annual energy usage and reduce the park’s carbon emissions by 21%, the 788-kW solar power system will power some of Dreamworld’s biggest attractions like The Giant Drop, Tower of Terror, and Steel Taipan, while putting energy back into the local grid. Dwayne Clark, General Manager of Commercial and Facilities at Ardent Leisure, said: “The longer-term reduction in energy costs far outweighed a costly upfront installation of the panels. Ardent Leisure has been doing its part to reduce its environmental footprint, and this installation marks a significant step to reduce carbon emissions at the theme park.”

Origin Zero solar customers to benefit from access to digital platform UPowr

Origin has over 15 years’ experience in solar sales and installations for homes and business across Australia, having installed more solar power capacity in Australia than any other solar retailer since the beginning of the local solar industry, as measured by SunWiz. To help support our capability to service the growing market for business solar systems, we have recently switched to an innovative new digital platform to manage commercial solar sales, design and engineering, installation and support for system sizes between 30 kW-100 kW.

The new platform – through UPowr – manages advanced system designs, shadings and savings forecasts, and in-field installation services. It will help us streamline the customer experience, support installers, and enable us to service more customers with tailored solar solutions. We’re currently live with UPowr in QLD, NSW, VIC, and SA, and will have WA coming online early 2024.

This collaboration is just another way we’re accelerating businesses towards net zero.

Termination of Scheme Implementation Deed

Origin Energy Limited (Origin) refers to its announcement on 4 December 2023 advising the Scheme Meeting results for the proposed acquisition of Origin involving a Brookfield-led consortium of investors (Brookfield) and EIG, by way of a Scheme of Arrangement (Scheme).

Electricity 2024 Analysis and forecast to 2026

The International Energy Agency’s sector report* offers a deep and comprehensive analysis of recent policies and market developments, and provides forecasts through 2026 for electricity demand, supply and CO2 emissions. This report, which has been published regularly since 2020, provides insight into the evolving generation mix. In addition, this year’s report features in-depth analysis on the drivers of recent declines in electricity demand in Europe; the data centre sector’s impact on electricity consumption; and recent developments in the global nuclear power sector.

Mandatory climate reporting

Earlier this year, the Australian Government confirmed its intention to introduce climate reporting obligations for large Australian businesses. Starting 1 July 2024, climate disclosures using the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) climate standard will be mandatory in Annual reports.

Even those not mandated may disclose voluntarily to attract investors concerned about climate risk. Directors must ensure robust reporting systems, evaluate climate governance, competency, and necessary data.
